FreezeM
I Got contacted by the scientests who created the startup company “FreezeM” to create PR and documentry images of their unique operation.
As explained on the FreezeM website:
Insects are a promising source for sustainable, alternative protein for the animal feed industry, vital to ensuring the wellbeing of a growing human population. But in order to make a true impact and replace existing components in animal feed, insects have to be produced at an industrial scale, all year long, and in a stable manner. FreezeM is developing novel technologies that will enable to create for the first-time stocks of ready-to-use suspended neonates and frozen eggs – a solution corresponding to the agriculture seed production.
They invited me to their Labs where they grow the Black soldier fly.
The Project called for photography of all the flys stages of life: From Egg to Neonite, to Larvae Pupae and finally - A full grown fly.
They would also be needing PR photos of the larger team and the founders.
I dont shoot macro photography frequently, but was excited to have that kind of challenge.
And then moved on to try and capture the neonites. They were small. very, very small. and moving.
This made it difficult to photograph, but after many attempts we got what we needed.
We then moved on to shooting the next phase in the fly’s development - Larvae
Each phase took multiple attempts at getting just the right light to hit our brave subjects.
I always try to do something extra for my clients, if they are willing to go along with a “different idea”.
I wanted to have a photo of the founders in the lab with the star of the show, the Black soldier fly.
And maybe make it just a bit surreal.
They agreed.
